Kendall AMD antimicrobial foam disc dressings have been developed to support your efforts in managing both moisture and bacterial balance. They are also effective against common problematic bacteria such as methicillin resistant Staphlococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin resistant Enterococcus (VRE).

Balancing Moisture and Bacteria to Create an Ideal Healing Environment

A better wound environment leads to better patient outcomes. 55511AMD Kendall AMD antimicrobial foam disc dressings provide an ideal healing environment by simultaneously managing moisture and bacteria in the dressing. As the foam dressing absorbs exudate, Polyhexamethylene Biguanide (PHMB) – a powerful yet safe antiseptic – targets and kills bacteria on contact. The dressing is an open cell polyurethane foam dressing and is impregnated with 0.5% Polyhexamethylene Biguanide (PHMB), a highly effective, low toxicity antiseptic.

Polyhexamethylene Biguanide (PHMB)

Kendall AMD antimicrobial foam dressings contain PHMB, a bacteria-killing polymer. Highly effective and safe, PHMB attacks bacteria on and within the dressing, limiting cross-contamination and helping to provide a bacteria-free wound healing environment.

Here’s how PHMB works:

  • PHMB binds to bacteria’s phospholipid (outer) membrane
  • Disrupts membrane, causing cytoplasm to leak out
  • Bacterial cell’s protective layer disintegrates
  • Bacterial cell collapses and dies
  • Nothing is left behind to mutate or replicate, so there is no known resistance
  • PHMB in the dressing continues to provide bacterial protection

PHMB is a safe, stable chemical with over 75 years of commercial use in such products as baby wipes, contact lens solutions and pool cleaners.

PHMB destroys Gram+ and Gram- Bacteria, Fungi and Yeast Effective against:

  • Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)
  • Vancomycin-resistant enterococcus (VRE)
  • Acinetobacter Baumannii (MDRAB)
  • Clostridium difficile (C. Diff)
  • Staphylococcus aureus
  • Staphylococcus epidermidis
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa
  • Escherichia coli
  • Candida albicans
  • Staphylococcus coagulase
  • Proteus mirabilis
  • Serratia marcescens
  • Enterobacter cloacae
  • Klebsiella pneumoniae
  • Enterococcus faecalis

Kendall AMD antimicrobial foam disc dressings are uniquely engineered to simultaneously manage moisture and bacteria, thus promoting an ideal, moist wound healing environment.

The dressings feature:

  • A micro-structured, open-cell surface that absorbs exudate
  • Vertical wicking action that moves fluid into foam core
  • A dense core that maximizes retention of exudate

In addition, the antimicrobial foam dressings are also soft and comfortable and can be worn up to 7 days. Kendall™ AMD antimicrobial foam dressings are compliant with most existing wound care protocols.

These dressings can be used on high risk patients to help protect the wound from contamination. Such as:

  • In presence of Gram Negative or Gram Positive bacteria (including MRSA, VRE, A. baumannii), Fungi / Yeast
  • Immunocompromised and/or immunosuppressed patient (cancer, HIV/AIDS, chemo/radiation treated)
  • History of infection, infection recurrence (diabetic foot ulcers, g-tube sites, catheter sites (IV, suprapubic, dialysis), pressure ulcers, etc.)
  • Medicated with steroids (such as prednisone) and at risk for infection
  • Urine or stool soiling the dressings due to incontinence
  • Challenges with yeast in skin folds, groin areas, under breasts, etc.

Kendall AMD antimicrobial foam dressings are indicated for use in management of post-surgical incisions, pressure ulcers, venous stasis ulcers, diabetic ulcers, donor sites, abrasions, lacerations, 1st and 2nd degree burns, dermatologic disorders, other wounds inflicted by trauma and, as a secondary dressing or cover dressing for packed wounds. It is an ideal dressing in the local management of exudate that may occur at surgically induced body exit sites such as tracheostomy, G-tube, J-tube, Penrose drain, chest tube, nephrostomy tube, sump drain, IV catheters, central venous lines, arterial catheters, dialysis catheters, peripherally inserted coronary catheters, mid-line catheters, externally placed orthopedic pins and epidural catheters.
